To promote the most sustainable agricultural practices and to maximize the benefit of humanely raising our animals, Prather Ranch focuses on selling the whole animal. From the outset, the ranch’s goal has been to offer high quality, sustainable, humanely raised beef in support of a whole animal sales model. It makes good business sense. The nose-to-tail approach lets the Prather Ranch customer reap the maximum benefit from the extraordinary measures the ranch takes to raise our cattle. From selecting superior genetics to the dry aging process, every detail is carefully followed to provide a excellent piece of meat for the customer.
Prather Ranch was founded in the 1800’s by the Prather family in Siskiyou County as a cow/calf beef operation. In 1964, Walter Ralphs, of the Ralphs Super Market family in southern California, purchased the ranch. In 1979 he hired Jim and Mary Rickert to manage the ranch. In later years the Rickerts purchased an interest in the ranch. Following Walt’s death in 2010, the Newell and Rickert families purchased the balance of the ranch from the Ralphs heirs.
The ranch is a unique closed-herd operation that raises its own hay, breeds its own cattle, and does its own slaughter and processing in its dedicated USDA processing plant. Prather Ranch was instrumental in creating one of the first Natural Beef programs for beef products in the country. The ranch became the first beef retailer to receive the “Certified Humane” designation from Humane Farm Animal Care.
Prather Ranch has been recognized several times by national and state beef organizations and environmental organizations with awards. The ranch received the California Governor’s Award twice, the Commercial Producer of the Year Award from the Beef Improvement Federation and the Aldo Leopold Award for environmental stewardship practices, to name a few.
In 1997 Prather Ranch became one of the first family owned beef purveyors to sell beef in farmers markets. This direct-to consumer approach began at markets near the ranch is Shasta and Siskiyou Counties and then headed south to the Bay Area markets in San Francisco and Marin Counties. The Rickerts’ philosophy of never selling any product they wouldn’t feed to their own grandchildren assures the customer that any beef they purchase will be a great eating experience.
